Can you tell our readers a little about BL/\CK CEILING and †HAT WAS †HEN †HIS IS NOW, can you also tell me about some of your collaborators with these projects?
BL/\CK CEILING: My name is dan ocean and i am a one man group called BL/\CK CEILING. t.w.t.t.i.n is a collaboration of myself (music) and Moon Mirror (vocals). BL/\CK CEILING has been around for only about 2 years. Up until then I was just making music as “ocean.”
Moon Mirror and I started making music around Spring 2011. I really liked her music and wanted to send her a song idea and from there we just started sending tracks back and forth and decided to make something out of it.
Can you tell me about your album DVST, what are some of the influencing factors that inspired it? Can you tell me a little bit about recording it as well?
BC: DVST is my first full length release on Phantasma Disques. It is some of my best work and some of my favorite also. The songs are very dark but also very emotional. It’s a soundtrack to the Apocalypse but more like The Road than The Road Warrior. It is also the first part of a two part project but I don’t want to give to much away just yet ;)
How did you hook up with Phantasma Disques?
BC: I was featured on 2 Phantasma Disques compalation cd’s before I released DVST; Tribute to Twin Peaks III and Tribute to DUNE. Cosmatropia De Xam asked if I would like to release something through PD. It was definatley an awesome experience.
What was your first experience like in a band or music project?
BC: I have been making electronic music for years on my own and just for myself to listen to. I guess my first interaction with other artists would be when I started giving beats to MC’s in my city to rhyme on. Much of my sound and structure is heavily based in hip hop still. It’s the “root” of BL/\CK CEILING.
What is it like to be an electronic artist outside of a major city, do you play live frequently in Seattle, what is the scene like there for electronic music?
BC: I live in Spokane,WA which is 2nd biggest city in WA so it’s big enough to have pretty wide-ranged music scene. I go to lots of shows and have friends in bands that perform often. It’s a bar city so theres always shows. I dj with my good friend Justin under the name, BROTHERS OV MIDNITE. We play at least once a month. I have never been a performance person so I don’t do many shows but recently, I have been working on developing my live act. I keep live shows few and far between. But when I do play live, I try to make it special and usually debut brand new music. Seattle is about 5 hours away and Portland is 8 hours so I will be playing shows in those cities soon. I will be playing Seattle in October on the 2nd Friday for a very special event. I am also opening for Uncanny Valley in 2 days here in Spokane.
Can you give me an example of a piece of music you consider perfect?
BC: A perfect piece of music would have to be Samuel Barbers’ Adagio for Strings. I listen to a lot of film scores. I love Clint Mansell and Ennio Morricone. I listen to Angelo Badalamenti at least once a day.
What artists are most inspiring to you?
BC: I listen to so much stuff. I really try to absorb as much music as possible. New sounds are like drugs to me. I get inspired to make music when I hear great music. I love Diplo. You can tell he makes music becuase he is obsessed with music. Stuff like that.
Have you had an experience with the supernatural that you’d be willing to share?
BC: I don’t know that I have had a supernatural expiereince but I def beleive in supernatural things. I’m hella scared of ghosts.
If you could collaborate with any artist living or dead who would it be?
BC: I would want to make a song Ian Curtis and Tori Amos.
Some are saying this is the greatest era to exist as a musician, others say it’s the worst, what has your experience been like?
BC: It’s def an era of it’s own. I love that there is this free for all sort of movement going on. Theres so many genres and micro-sub-genres and titles and shit. I love it. Besides flying cars, this is the fucking future.
If you could choose how the world would end, what would you choose?
BC: If I could choose how the world would end..Probably have to be a huge comet hitting us or something. Post-Nuclear war shit would only be cool if you had a fall out shelter like in Blast from the Past.
What is your astrological sign, does it describe you?
BC: Aquarius. I guess my moods fit the description.
If I were to vacation in your hell what should I expect to find there?
BC: My hell would not be hot. It would be cold and dark. Sadness Swamps mixed with Dead Marshes.
