YOUR RECORD IS FUCKING INSANE, I LOVE IT SO MUCH, what inspired it? Can you tell me a little bit about recording it as well?
Thanks so much for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoy it! The record is focused on evaluating others around me and expressing my dissatisfaction or love for their actions. It’s an album I wrote, performed, and recorded during 2012 from a bedroom at my place. Hardware, mostly analog synthesizers where used to record this record. I’ve spent many many hours locked in a room playing around with things to make it. My neighbors probably hate me for it. The sound and feeling of the record is influenced by the blending of opposites. I like the idea of meshing distinct emotions to make something texturized and interesting. For example, I like mixing harshness with elegance, unhappy tones with warmness, anger with hope, etc. Kind of answered that out of order for you, sorry.
Can you tell me a bit about your first music project?
My first musical project was playing in a band with friends during middle school and high school. Nothing musically important was produced, but I had some really great times doing it with them. None of us really knew what we were doing, but we liked to pretend we did.
What other projects have you been involved in?
Nothing really. This is my focus. I’ve been playing around with electronic music since around 2003, but I have not been happy or satisfied with the output until recently. I gave myself an ultimatum; focus on producing decent songs or stop trying. I have not been involved in other projects because my friends that have some common influences with me have moved away. Otherwise, things might be different. Maybe something in the future though.
Can you tell me about some of your current favorite artists, local or elsewhere?
There are a bunch of newer artists coming out these days I think are really great. Off the top of my head and what has been in my stereo… Kontravoid, Der Noir, Neud Photo, Genuflux, Cold Showers, Black Marble are some. But really, every week I feel I have a new band/artist I can’t get enough of.
What is it about the aesthetic of modern goth culture and dark electronic music that captures your imagination?
There are so many sub genres of dark electronic music and goth right now it’s crazy and intriguing at the same time. But, I’m more captured by the early-mid 80s era. Everything seemed so authentic, mysterious and experimental, not that today’s music can’t be…but they weren’t looking for Facebook likes.
Can you give me an example of a song you consider perfect?
Probably Depeche Mode’s “Lie to Me” or “Master and Servant”. Every time I hear those 2 tracks my mind and body melt.
If I were to vacation in your hell what should I expect to find there?
My hell would consist of all females as Rihanna, all males as Scott Stapp circa early 00’s, the only clothes available to wear are florescent 90s windbreakers, Nicki Minaj’s music is played on repeat everywhere I go …and piles of steaming hot eggs all over the place. These are all things that make me puke in my mouth when thought of or seen. But I think I’m already living in this hell.
Have you had an experience with the supernatural that you’d be willing to share? Not that I’m aware of…
If you could collaborate with any artist living or dead who would it be?
What are some of your favorite films, and a favorite line of dialog from a film?
I’m not too into movies. They are more of a temporary pleasure for me. I forget them soon after. I was never one to remember quotes either.
Can you describe your most emotionally moving moment involving music? Or, the moment of live music that has had the greatest impact on you?
Oh, that’s a hard question, I never thought about it. I’m honestly not sure. I just get very excited when I hear great music, it over takes my entire thought process. The greatest live music moment I’ve had has to be my first concert of course, which I’m assuming is the same for most people. How can you forget the first time you saw a live band? Mine was the Deftones when they were touring Around the Fur. Super small club, so much energy, blew my little teenage mind. I’m still listening to these guys, they get better with age.
Some are saying this is the greatest era to exist as a musician, others say it’s the worst, what has your experience been like?
I don’t think it’s either. It’s just odd right now. You can make and put your heart into an album and have a good amount of people love it…and not actually sell one album b/c they are just listening to it through their iPhone on Spotify or ripped it off somewhere. I just truly miss the days when people fell in love with an album, went out and had to hunt it down, then actually buy it…go home, study the liner notes and put the album on repeat until the could afford to buy another one. I’m still doing this, but wish other would. There is no feeling like warping into the world of an album.
BUT, on the other hand if it wasn’t for this era, you would have never heard what I wrote in my room, I would have not been able to record it that well, or have the gear I have to record it with. I also would have never had the opportunity to answer this question. So I’m split 50/50 I here. Today’s tools are so powerful but greed, selfishness and ADD screw it up most of the time.
Have you ever been to a psychic, would you be willing to share that experience if so?
I’ve never been to a psychic. I don’t find a need to see one. I’m ok with being surprised and finding out things organically.
Do you feel things happen for a reason, do you have an experience that would be evidence of this?
Yes I do, nothing I wish to share with the public though… personal.
